- “The Canterbury Christmas Riot of 1647” In 1647 the celebration of Christmas was made an offence by Parliament. Chris Skingley outlines the riot that followed the Mayor of Canterbury’s efforts to prevent celebrations and to keep shops and businesses open for trade as usual.
